Addressing ongoing political hurdles for domestic mineral production and processing, SAFE CEO Robbie Diamond made the following statement:
“We recommend Congress look at the bigger picture when considering new mine development. Resources like copper, lithium, and nickel are not just vital for EVs, but also the wider transition to carbon-free energy. To meet the Administration’s recent commitments to EVs and solar energy will require more of these metals than ever before. With increased domestic production and processing, we have an opportunity to remake tomorrow’s mineral supply chains in a way that supports labor and environmental standards, reduces our reliance upon foreign adversaries, and benefits the American economy.
“New mine development and mineral processing inevitably come with challenges. A reason can always be found to say no. However, Americans need to ask whether blocking new projects at home is worth further hollowing out American manufacturing, worsening risks from climate change, and increasing dependency on China for these crucial materials. America’s leaders need to get serious: the future we’re envisioning – a prosperous country, a cleaner planet – cannot be achieved without American resources and American workers.”
