Washington, D.C.—In response to the announcement by the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) that it has awarded a 10-year contract to Oshkosh Defense to build its Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV), SAFE President and CEO Robbie Diamond made the following statement:
“It is disappointing that today’s announcement does not immediately commit to electrifying one of our nation’s largest vehicle fleets. This contract is a golden opportunity to stimulate the domestic EV market and supply chain, and a commitment to electrifying the NGDV would provide a clear incentive for further domestic EV industry development along the entire supply chain, from minerals to markets.”
“The USPS NGDVs should be electrified as a matter of urgency, as China is leading the global EV transition. Electrifying these delivery vehicles will help our nation respond at scale to compete with China, and ultimately develop an American EV industry that does not leave the U.S. dependent on Chinese domestic policy for the materials, components and vehicles that will power our 21st century economy.”
In its recent Commanding Heights of Global Transportation report, SAFE advocates for both Congress and USPS to ensure that a majority of its vehicles are domestically-manufactured EVs. This will provide another boost to building the supply chain in the United States, and support the necessary charging infrastructure.
