Washington, DC—Responding to initial reports of a signed deal between the United States and Australia on critical minerals and rare earths supply security, Abigail Hunter, Executive Director of the SAFE Center for Critical Minerals Strategy, gave the following statement:
“The initial details of the American-Australian deal indicate promising breakthroughs between our two nations at a time when supply uncertainty over rare earths and other critical minerals are reaching a boiling point.
Shared responsibility, joint investment, and mutual goals will help us leverage Australia’s high-standard jurisdiction to strengthen—not undercut—U.S. producers, offering an opportunity for meaningful progress in the face of China’s global market dominance. Of particular note is an advanced gallium refinery in Western Australia, which addresses an essential market gap and is understood to bring in other high-trust international partners.
We look forward to reading the details and supporting continued cooperation.”
