STATEMENT: SAFE’s Coalition for Reimagined Mobility Commends Commerce Department’s Action on Connected Vehicle Supply Chain Security

Washington, DCSAFE’s Coalition for Reimagined Mobility (ReMo) applauds the Commerce Department for taking decisive action to address the national security risks posed by foreign adversaries’ access to supply chains for connected and automated vehicles. This critical step underscores the need to safeguard the technologies that underpin the future of transportation and national security.

“While this rule is an important measure to protect our national security, it must be part of a broader, coordinated, and continuous effort to stay ahead of evolving threats,” said Avery Ash, Executive Director of SAFE’s Coalition for Reimagined Mobility. “At the same time, we must ensure that the United States remains a global leader in the transformative technologies that will define the 21st century.”

The Coalition looks forward to continued collaboration with the Commerce Department under President Trump’s leadership to proactively address security challenges. It is vital to remain vigilant against adversaries like China, who seek to exploit supply chains across the transportation sector and other strategic industries. ReMo supports a mobility future that is advanced, secure, and supports the nation’s prosperity.

SAFE’s ReMo submitted detailed comments to the Department of Commerce in response to the Announced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in April, and in response to the Proposed Rulemaking in October. Topics addressed in the comments included:

  • Current prevalence of sophisticated Chinese components in the automotive supply chain
  • Overlap between connected vehicle and military defense technologies
  • Data collection, access, and national security risks
  • Cybersecurity vulnerabilities to foreign adversaries
  • Benefits of localization and diversification of the ICTS supply chain
  • Trade implications for potential vehicles and components built in Mexico, that might otherwise circumvent trade policies or tariffs

In 2024, ReMo published its flagship report, Unlocking a 21st Century Mobility System: How to Rethink the Future of Mobility and Restore Leadership in Transportation Innovation, which highlighted these risks and documented the extent of action required by the U.S. government and industry to remain both globally competitive and secure.
