Washington, DC—In light of ongoing project reviews at the Department of Energy, SAFE joins other advocates calling for an all-of-the-above approach to energy dominance that includes interregional infrastructure development, and specifically the JTIQ portfolio. Danielle Russo, Executive Director of SAFE’s Center for Grid Security, gave the following statement:
“As DOE continues its review of GRIP Program awards, the Center for Grid Security calls for swift clarity and action on high-impact projects—chief among them, the Joint Targeted Interconnection Queue (JTIQ) project between MISO and SPP. With the potential to unlock over 30 gigawatts of new generation and deliver more abundant, affordable power to over 60 million Americans, the JTIQ project is a cornerstone of the interregional backbone our grid urgently needs.
Allowing a project of this significance to stall would not only undermine grid reliability, but also endanger America’s pursuit of energy dominance, which underpins our national economic strength and security. For these reasons, we strongly urge the advancement of the JTIQ project without further delay. Achieving the Administration’s critically important energy goals depends on making transformative projects like this a reality.”
SAFE appreciates the leadership and advocacy of Senators Boozman (R-AR), Cotton (R-AR), Cramer (R-ND), Fischer (R-NE), and Hoeven (R-ND) in their recent letter to Secretary Wright urging protection and support of funding for JTIQ.
SAFE’s Center for Grid Security published a report, Wired for Defense, on the role of interregional transmission expansion in national security in 2024.
