STATEMENT: Chinese Export Controls on Critical Minerals Incompatible with US Interests

Washington, DC—In response to China’s recent anticipated efforts to continue tightening export restrictions on critical metal and mineral inputs essential for dual-use technologies, Abigail Hunter, Executive Director of SAFE’s Center for Critical Minerals Strategy, gave the following statement:

“These announcements will keep shocking our system until we take meaningful action. As the US deploys more tariffs, China’s likely retaliation could limit access to critical materials for American energy and defense manufacturers. This trend is incompatible with our national interests and underscores the urgent need for policymakers and industry to reduce dependence on China and enhance our mineral security.”

This development serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with over-reliance on foreign sources for strategic materials. SAFE supports a holistic approach to American and allied mineral security that prioritizes responsible domestic mining, refining, and recycling capabilities while forging stronger partnerships with allied and partner nations to diversify supply chains.

Now more than ever, decisive action is needed to protect America’s technological leadership and energy future. SAFE will continue advocating for policies that reduce vulnerabilities and strengthen our nation’s position in the global economy.
