On May 12, 2025, SAFE’s Center for Strategic Industrial Materials (CSIM) sent a letter to the Department of Energy (DOE) commending its focus on revitalizing the domestic steel and aluminum industries and urging the Department to move forward with vital investments in the defense industrial base.
Aluminum and steel are essential in civilian and military applications – utilized in infrastructure, manufacturing, and advanced weapons systems. However, these strategic industries face constant challenges – permitting delays, high energy costs, and increased foreign competition. The nation must reshore critical production and recycling capacity to counter decades of industrial erosion.
In the coming decade, where strategic industrial materials come from and how they are produced will have profound consequences on America’s national security and economic competitiveness. Therefore, targeted DOE funding is essential to achieving the President’s stated goals of rebuilding American manufacturing, ensuring national defense readiness, and securing domestic supply chains for critical materials.
