SAFE’s Center for Grid Security’s Comments on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) Notice of Request for Comments on the North American Electric Reliability Corporation’s (NERC) Interregional Transfer Capability Study: Strengthening Reliability Through the Energy Transformation

On Tuesday February 25, 2025, SAFE’s Center for Grid Security submitted comments in response to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) Notice of Request for Comments on the North American Electric Reliability Corporation’s (NERC) Interregional Transfer Capability Study: Strengthening Reliability Through the Energy Transformation.

The study takes a critical step forward in identifying and addressing interregional transmission needs – but it does not adequately consider the needs of the largest consumer of energy in the federal government, the Department of Defense (DoD). The Center for Grid Security’s comments explain the importance of adequately considering the DoD’s power needs, as well as how insufficient interregional planning stands to impact the operational readiness of military installations throughout the United States.

SAFE’s Center for Grid Security commends NERC for its efforts in drafting this study and encourages FERC to use these comments to better understand and incorporate the transmission needs of the DoD. America’s national security is dependent upon a resilient and reliable supply of power, and smart and effective interregional planning is necessary in promoting a power grid able to withstand extreme weather events and attacks.
