Washington D.C. —In response to the Department of Energy’s announcement of Actions to Secure American Critical Minerals and Materials Supply Chain, Abigail Hunter, SAFE’s Executive Director of the Center for Critical Minerals Strategy, released the following statement:
“The Department of Energy’s announcement is an important step toward leveraging existing funding authorities to address the upstream and midstream financing gap. By adopting a more balanced approach that prioritizes upstream and midstream investments, including advancing byproduct recovery and tapping into secondary and unconventional sources, the United States can accelerate supply chain resiliency and support national security objectives. SAFE applauds this announcement and encourages continued coordination and alignment of funding with an overarching federal strategy.”
SAFE’s recent reports, Resources for Resources and Pillars of Power, highlight the critical role of public financing in unlocking private sector capital and bringing innovative critical mineral production technologies to market. The nearly $1 billion announcement also corresponds with President Trump’s Unleashing American Energy and Immediate Measures to Increase American Mineral Production executive order, and signifies an intent to advance and scale domestic critical mineral mining, processing, and manufacturing technologies.
