TRUMP’S MINERAL BONA FIDES: Sen. Marco Rubio and Rep. Mike Waltz, Trump’s reported picks for Secretary of State and national security adviser, respectively, have been some of Congress’ most staunch advocates for reducing reliance on China for critical minerals. Their selections are raising hopes among minerals advocates that the Trump administration will bolster support for U.S. producers.
“Rubio and Waltz have both advanced policies reflecting a deep understanding of China’s grip on critical minerals markets,” said Abigail Hunter, executive director of the Center for Critical Minerals Strategy at the think tank SAFE. “They have introduced and supported legislation that goes beyond restricting supplies from China, but also helps ensure the U.S. and allies have greater mineral security through increased domestic production, diplomatic efforts, and international coordination.”
