Energy Security Fact Pack: Q3 2017

The Energy Security Fact Pack for Q3 2017 examines growth in the U.S. electric vehicle market, improvements in EV battery range and efficiency, the EV plans of automakers worldwide, and more.

During a time of heightened uncertainty in energy markets, SAFE’s Fact Pack includes the following insights:

  • U.S. crude oil and petroleum product imports fell to 9.7 mbd in Q3 2017 (-0.4 mbd y-o-y), breaking 10 consecutive quarters of y-o-y increases.
  • Global oil production increased in Q3 2017 to 98.3 mbd as Saudi cuts were offset by resurgent production elsewhere.
  • Global oil demand grew 1.2 mbd y-o-y in Q3 2017 driven by growth in non-OECD countries (+1.0 mbd y-o-y).
  • New light truck sales averaged 10.9 million units in Q3 2017, increasing by approximately 0.3 million units y-o-y.
  • Light trucks now account for roughly 64% of light-duty vehicle sales, a 3.0 percentage point increase, y-o-y.
  • Oil and product prices saw moderate increases in Q3, with the WTI and Brent widening $4.48 per barrel between July and September 2017.
  • The average fuel economy rating of new light-duty vehicles increased slightly in Q3 2017 to 25.3 mpg (+0.1 mpg q-o-q), continuing a two-year trend.
  • Over 53,000 plug-in electric vehicles were sold in Q3 (+16% y-o-y and +11% q-o-q), crossing the 50,000-vehicle threshold for the first time.
  • The number of advanced fueling stations nationwide increased 122% between 2013 and 2017, a net addition of approximately 33,300 stations. 95% of these new additions were for electric charging.
