There is just one remaining alumina refinery in the U.S., accounting for just 2 percent of global production. Joe Quinn, Vice President of Strategic Industrial Materials for SAFE, the group formerly known as Securing America’s Future Energy, said that revitalizing the domestic industry will depend, in part, on sourcing more alumina. “This is a tremendous step forward,” Quinn said. “Demand for primary aluminum is accelerating with defense applications, direct manufacturing and energy transition products. Any new production of domestic alumina is going to meet a need.”
