STATEMENT: SAFE Applauds Advancement of “Electric Supply Chain Act”

Washington, DC – SAFE welcomed the House of Representatives Energy & Commerce Energy Subcommittee’s passage of the “Electric Supply Chain Act” sponsored by Energy Subcommittee Chairman Bob Latta (OH-5). The bill directs the Secretary of Energy to begin periodic reporting on the exposure of U.S. electric and critical material supply chains to supply shortages, demand shocks, workforce inadequacies, and dominance by foreign entities of concern, including China and Russia. These reports will also include key recommended actions for the executive and legislative branches to secure these supply chains and directly address the supply chain challenges plaguing America’s bulk power system.

Danielle Russo, Executive Director of SAFE’s Center for Grid Security gave the following statement:

“America does not currently have the supply chain we require for true grid security. The analysis and recommendations from the Department of Energy will be valuable in directing public policy toward strategies to secure our grid component supply chains, address national security vulnerabilities, and provide vital information to help develop a domestic workforce trained and ready to enable our grid to meet future electricity demand.”

Abigail Hunter, Executive Director of SAFE’s Center for Critical Mineral Strategy gave the following statement recognizing the bill’s efforts to advance American mineral security:

“Minerals are both critical energy inputs and incredibly energy intensive to process. Chairman Latta’s bill will unearth supply chain vulnerabilities affecting our bulk power system and midstream challenges to process those minerals at home. Simultaneously securing inputs and infrastructure is the foundation for energy security and long-term industrial strength.”
