Policy Lead, General Motors
Tom Van Heeke is Policy Lead for New Mobility Systems and Climate Change at General Motors. In this role, Tom focuses on policy considerations related to the energy and environmental impacts of autonomous vehicles, as well as urban mobility and climate issues. Prior to joining General Motors, Tom served as a transportation budget and policy analyst with the Legislative Analyst’s Office in Sacramento, California, where he was an expert on issues related to the state’s high-speed rail project and statewide transportation funding. He began his career with Frontier Group, a Boston-based think tank, where he studied and wrote extensively on state and local transportation, energy, and environmental matters. He has been quoted by media outlets including the Associated Press and Streetsblog.org, featured as an interview guest on California public affairs show The Maddy Report, and has testified as an expert witness before the California State Legislature on several occasions. Tom graduated with honors and Phi Beta Kappa recognition from Grinnell College, and holds a Master of Public Policy degree from the University of Michigan’s Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy.
