The National Summit on Energy Security - October 16, 2013 - Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium - Washington, D.C.

The OPEC oil embargo touched off a crippling price shock and devastating economic recession that still serves as a vivid example of the dangers of U.S. oil dependence. Forty years later, energy and transportation markets are experiencing dramatic changes, presenting the nation with an opportunity to move beyond the era of oil dependence. To mark the 40th Anniversary of the OPEC Oil Embargo, SAFE will host a ground-breaking summit, bringing together leading CEOs, technology innovators, policymakers, and military leaders to assess the state of American energy security and propose lasting solutions that will make our nation more prosperous and secure.

The finalists will present their technologies at the event, and the public (audience members and online participants) will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite. Up to $175,000 in prize money will be awarded.

Tracking Our Progress:

SAFE and Roubini Global Economics (RGE) will unveil an important new economic indicator leading up to the National Summit. The “Oil Security Index” will measure America’s exposure to the global oil market and its capability to respond to disruptions in oil supply. The index will be comprised of key data including expenditures on oil, the stability of import sources, domestic production, and the size of strategic reserves. It will be released quarterly following its introduction.
